“One of the hardest adult lessons is that you still have to show up, no matter what you’re carrying.”
There comes a point in adulthood when you realize that life doesn’t always wait for you to feel better.
You can wake up heartbroken and still have responsibilities waiting for you. You can lose someone you love and still have emails to answer. You can be exhausted from everything happening inside your head and still have another morning arrive.
There is no perfect pause button.
And perhaps that is one of the hardest things about becoming an adult.
You learn that you can be struggling deeply while the rest of the world continues moving as if nothing happened.
Life Doesn’t Always Ask If You’re Ready
When we are younger, we sometimes imagine that difficult moments come with a clear ending.
You go through something painful, recover, and then return to normal.
But adulthood rarely works that neatly.
Sometimes you’re grieving while going to work. You’re anxious while having dinner with your family. You’re tired while answering someone’s question, “How are you?” You smile, respond, complete your responsibilities, and continue carrying something nobody else can see.
That’s the strange part.
From the outside, you may look completely fine.
Inside, you’re trying to hold yourself together.
And yet, the meeting still starts at 9.
The bills still need to be paid.
The assignment still needs to be finished.
The people you love still need you.
Life continues.
Showing Up Doesn’t Mean Pretending You’re Fine
This is where we need to understand something important.
Showing up doesn’t mean pretending that nothing hurts.
It doesn’t mean forcing yourself to smile when you want to cry. It doesn’t mean ignoring grief, suppressing emotions, or acting strong every second of the day.
Sometimes showing up simply means doing what you can with the version of yourself you have today.
If you’re exhausted, perhaps your best looks different.
If you’re grieving, perhaps your best is smaller.
If you’re going through something emotionally heavy, perhaps getting through the day is already an achievement.
There is a difference between giving up and giving yourself permission to move slowly.
You don’t always need to conquer the day.
Sometimes you just need to get through it.
Ask yourself: Am I actually unable to continue, or am I simply expecting myself to perform at 100% while carrying something heavy?
We often judge ourselves because our productivity decreases during difficult seasons. But you’re not a machine. Your emotional state affects your energy, concentration, patience, and motivation.
That doesn’t make you weak.
It makes you human.
Do It Sad
There will be days when you don’t feel motivated.
Do it anyway.
Not because your feelings don’t matter, but because your feelings don’t have to control every decision you make.
You can be sad and still study.
You can be disappointed and still work.
You can be lonely and still take care of yourself.
You can be uncertain and still take the next step.
You don’t have to wait until you feel completely okay before continuing your life.
Sometimes you become okay while continuing.
Do It Grieving
Grief is different.
There are losses that don’t disappear simply because you have responsibilities.
You may carry someone’s absence for months or years. Certain places remind you of them. Certain songs bring everything back. A random memory can turn an ordinary afternoon into…
